Vitoconnect communication module

Vitoconnect is the interface between the boiler and the app. It is required for operating the heating system from a smartphone or tablet and for remote system maintenance by a contractor using the Vitoguide app. The Vitoconnect is connected directly to the Vitotronic control unit of your Viessmann heating system or to the Ecotronic control unit of wood boilers via a cable.

The Vitoconnect uses a comprehensive security concept that has successfully passed a VDE Smart Home information security test. Here, find out what's included with the Vitoconnect, how to install and commission the box, what you need to bear in mind ... and more.

Product information

The following components are included as standard with every Vitoconnect:

  • Wall mounted communication module for connecting to the broadband router
  • Power cable with plug-in power supply unit (1.5  m long)
  • Connecting cable with Optolink connection for communication module/boiler control unit (3  m long)

Communication

  • Via Optolink interface with the boiler control unit
  • Via WiFi with the DSL router

Connections

  • Plug-in power supply unit (230  V / 50  Hz)
  • Connecting cable for communication module/Optolink connection
  • WiFi communication for connection to the internet

All Viessmann heat generators with Vitotronic control unit including the Optolink interface can be connected to the Vitoconnect. See the list below for compatible models:

  • Vitodens 050-W (BPJC, BPJD)

Instructions

As previously described, the Vitoconnect is the interface between the heating system – in particular the control unit – and the app for operating it (for example ViCare). To ensure trouble-free control, the Vitoconnect must be installed and commissioned. To do this, follow the steps below.

Mount the Vitoconnect on the wall. Ensure the installation site is dry and protected from frost. Also make sure that the WiFi signal has a sufficient range. Then make the connections. There are two connections on the underside of the Vitoconnect for the electrical connection and the connection to the control unit: a micro USB connection for the power supply via the plug-in power supply unit and for the Optolink/USB connecting cable. The heating system's control unit also has an Optolink/USB port.

User registration via the ViCare app and configuration of the Vitoconnect

The next and central step is user registration, as the Vitoconnect can only be commissioned with a valid user account. For the ViCare app, do this as follows:

  1. Download the ViCare app.
  2. Tap "Create new account" to create your user account.
  3. Scan the QR code on your heat generator or invoice.
  4. If no code is available, enter the manufacturing data and ID and register.
  5. On Android devices, the connection to the "Vitoconnect" WiFi is now established automatically.
  6. If you are using iOS: Close the app and go to the device settings. Then manually establish a connection with the "Vitoconnect" WiFi and paste the WPA2 password from the clipboard. Now switch back to the app.
  7. Finally, follow the instructions in the app to set up a home network, enter your location and personal data, and accept the privacy policy and terms of use.

Vitoconnect and the ViCare app are now set up and ready for use. This is also indicated by the two upper green LEDs on the Vitoconnect.

You also have the option of registering only your new system. We will then extend your warranty and confirm this with a system certificate. This also contains all the data for your system. If you have already established a connection with the ViCare app, you can use the information given there.

The full range of functions of the Vitoconnect is only available if both the Vitoconnect itself and the control unit are correctly connected and configured. Furthermore, a permanent internet connection via a WiFi router must be available. Otherwise, the data cannot be transmitted from the heating controller to the app. Last but not least, a user account must have been set up. This links the Vitoconnect to the system's account (in the app).

General information on commissioning:

  • Before commissioning, check the system requirements for communication via the local IP / WiFi network.
  • For operating the Vitoconnect, an available internet connection with flat rate data (no time or volume restrictions) is required. The WiFi signal must be sufficiently strong and can be amplified using a repeater if necessary.
  • To ensure that messages can still be sent if there is a power failure, we recommend connecting the Vitoconnect and WiFi router to the power supply via an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
  • The WiFi router should be protected by a sufficiently strong WPA2 password, as sensitive data is transmitted via the connection.
  • The Vitoconnect should be installed at a distance of at least 0.3  metres from the heat generator.

Firewall settings:

  • Port 443 (HTTPS) and port  123 (NTP) must be open.
  • The MAC address is printed on the device label.

Potential error messages

The Vitoconnect has three LEDs that indicate the connection status to the heat generator and the Viessmann server and provide information about the system functions. The basic principle is relatively simple and based on a traffic light system.
